Son charged with driving mother's dead body around Penn Township; coroner rules homicide

A Maryland woman found dead in her SUV in Penn Township Monday afternoon was strangled and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office ruled it a homicide Wednesday.

Hyun Ahn, 61, of Owings Mills, was found dead on the 100 block of Fruitville Pike on the floor of the rear passenger area of a Toyota RAV4 in the parking lot of the Stiegel Manor Apartments complex.

Northern Lancaster Regional Police charged Ahn’s son, Kevin Hyun Ahn, 31, Tuesday with one count of abuse of corpse, a misdemeanor offense, saying he had driven the Toyota with his mother’s body stuffed in the back seat with clothing and a Keurig coffee box on top of it, according to charging documents.

Police said a relative called police Monday saying Kevin Ahn was acting strange outside saying he was “talking in numbers” and speaking gibberish, leaving a note on the dashboard of his mother’s vehicle. The relative read the note where Kevin Ahn asked for a funeral for his mother, saying his brain was fried and that his mother lied to him and gave him fake money.

“I lost my mind. Forgive me. Please call my sister,” part of the note read, according to police.

When confronted, Kevin Ahn ran from the relative, according to charging documents, and was found by police nearby. Police found Hyun Ahn’s body in the back of the car shortly after with burst blood vessels in her eyes and strangulation marks on her neck.

The coroner performed the autopsy Wednesday and said a traumatic brain injury contributed to Ahn’s death. Homicide is a death at the hands of another person. Prosecutors decide if a homicide is a crime.

Kevin Ahn is not charged with homicide. The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office said they are working with local and Maryland law enforcement to investigate Hyun Ahn’s death and additional charges may be filed.

He is in Lancaster County Prison and has been denied bail, with his docket saying they could not guarantee he would appear for his next court date on April 1.
