저는 저축액의 대부분을 기존 투자 포트폴리오에 재투자합니다. 현금 비축분을 따로 보유하는 대신, 비상 상황이 발생하면 신용카드를 활용하거나 친구 및 가족의 도움을 받는 방식으로 대처하고 있습니다.
또한 자녀의 교육 자금 계획을 아직 완벽하게 세우지는 못했지만, 조만간 '529 플랜(529 plan)'을 개설할 계획입니다. 그동안 계속 미뤄왔던 일이지만, 이제부터는 매달 최소 500달러씩 납입할 생각입니다.
제 주택 담보 대출은 7년 동안 금리가 고정되는 7년 만기 변동 금리 대출(ARM) 상품이라, 당분간은 안정적인 상태입니다. 현재 3년 차에 접어들었으므로, 금리가 조정되기까지는 앞으로 약 4년 정도의 여유가 있습니다.
이 시골 동네에 거주하면서 감수해야 할 가장 큰 단점은 바로 출퇴근 문제입니다.
이곳은 시애틀과 벨뷰에서 약 30마일 정도 떨어져 있는데, 일주일에 5일, 매일 왕복으로 약 1시간 반씩 소요됩니다. 사무실로 출근하는 날이면 도로 위에서만 대략 3시간을 보내게 되는데, 이 때문에 몸이 지쳐 업무 생산성도 떨어지곤 합니다.
하지만 장점도 분명합니다. 이전 집보다 더 신축이고 규모도 훨씬 큰 집을 장만할 수 있었다는 점입니다. 집의 면적은 약 2,400제곱피트 정도 됩니다. 아이가 야외에서 마음껏 뛰어놀 수 있고, 집에서 차로 불과 1분 거리에 호수가 있어 날씨가 좋은 날이면 그곳에 가서 수영도 하고 휴식도 취할 수 있습니다.
저희는 필요할 때마다 보모를 고용하는데, 근무 시간에 따라 하루에 약 100달러에서 250달러 정도의 비용이 듭니다. 현재 아내가 직장에 다니지 않고 있어 외벌이로 생활하고 있다 보니, 소득 수준과 관계없이 육아 비용이 상당히 부담스럽게 느껴집니다. 육아비, 의료비, 그리고 전반적인 생활비까지 합쳐지면 지출이 금세 눈덩이처럼 불어나곤 합니다.

또한 조만간 몇 가지 큰 지출이 예정되어 있습니다. 오는 11월에 아이가 태어날 예정이라 병원비와 출산 비용은 물론, 아이를 맞이하기 위한 준비 비용도 지출해야 합니다. 아울러 뒷마당에 잔디와 포장석을 깔아 새롭게 단장하는 공사도 계획하고 있습니다. 게다가 가족을 만나러 인도로 여행을 다녀올 계획도 세워 두었습니다.
연간 소득이 30만 달러에 육박하는데도 불구하고, 저는 여전히 재정적으로 안정감을 느끼지 못하고 있습니다.
재정적 안정감을 느끼게 해 줄 소득 기준치는 인플레이션의 영향으로 계속 변동하고 있지만, 현재 시점에서는 연간 40만 달러에서 45만 달러 정도를 벌어야 비로소 마음이 놓일 것 같습니다.
저희는 현재 살고 있는 동네에 계속 머무를 계획입니다. 가장 큰 단점은 출퇴근 문제이지만, 아이들을 위해서는 이곳에 사는 것이 훨씬 더 좋습니다. 학군이 우수하고 동네 분위기도 안전하며, 무엇보다 이곳이 진정한 '우리 집'처럼 느껴지기 때문입니다. 저희 가족은 이곳을 정말 사랑합니다.
저희 가족은 코스트코를 아주 즐겨 이용합니다.
식료품, 생활용품, 인테리어 소품, 장난감 등을 포함하여 코스트코에서만 한 달에 약 1,500달러를 지출하고 있습니다. 코스트코 외에도 추가적인 식료품 구매를 위해 매달 400달러에서 500달러 정도를 더 씁니다. 밖에서 사 마시는 커피는 가격이 비싸기 때문에, 가급적 집에서 직접 커피를 만들어 마시려고 노력합니다. 또한, 보통 친구들과 함께하거나 부부끼리 한 달에 두 번 정도 외식을 합니다.
여가 활동으로는 가끔 영화관을 찾기도 합니다. 박물관이나 실내 놀이터 이용료로는 평균적으로 한 달에 약 50달러를 지출하고 있습니다.
